Starting the camera with a hand gesture
By Con, founder of Music Wide Selfie · Updated 22 October 2026
Short answerSome camera apps can start a countdown when they see an open hand. The built-in iPhone Camera app doesn’t, so use the timer, a remote, an Apple Watch or Voice Control instead. Hand Signal is in Music Wide Selfie’s Premium and Crown plans.
How it works
The app watches the frame for a specific hand shape, then starts a countdown. It needs good light and your hand clearly visible.
Limits
- Busy backgrounds can confuse detection.
- Low light makes it unreliable.
- Gloves or partial hands may not register.
Alternatives
- Timer.
- Bluetooth remote.
- Apple Watch.
- Voice Control.
Questions
Does it record all the time watching for my hand?
Apps should analyse frames on the device without recording until you trigger them. Check each app’s privacy details.
