How to mount your phone safely: tripods, clamps and mounts

Short answerUse a mount with a spring clamp that grips the phone’s sides firmly, put the tripod on a flat surface with legs fully spread, keep the phone’s weight centred, and test it with a gentle nudge before you walk away.

Types

  • Mini tripod: tabletop height, very portable.
  • Full tripod: eye height anywhere.
  • Clamp: grips shelves, rails and bike bars.
  • Bendy legs: wrap around poles and branches.

Safety checks

  1. Clamp the phone across its middle so it’s balanced.
  2. Spread the legs fully on a flat surface.
  3. Avoid extending the centre column high outdoors in wind.
  4. Nudge it gently: if it wobbles, fix it.
  5. Weight the tripod with a bag in wind.

Cases

Very thick cases may not fit some clamps. Check the clamp’s maximum width.

Questions

Can I use a tripod with a MagSafe phone?

MagSafe mounts are quick, but a strong bump can knock the phone off. Use a clamp for outdoor or busy places.
